June 16, 2017
Hello everyone. As we move closer to the July-August vacation season, I wanted to bring you up to date on some the activities your Chamber has been involved in.
The Community Futures Development Corporation, supported by the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce recently held a 2017 Regional Economic Renewal Summit. The Summit was part of province-wide initiative to develop regional priorities that promote economic activity.
Some 80 invited delegates from SDG, Akwesasne and Cornwall engaged in roundtable discussions focused on three key objectives:
∙ Attracting and retaining talent to the region.
∙ Identifying barriers to growth and regulatory hurdles.
∙ Attracting new investments – retaining/leveraging current investments
From the discussions evolved five themes, each one with theme committee members charged with identifying objectives for each one. The emerging themes are:
∙ Regional development
∙ International crossing
∙ Youth engagement-mentoring
∙ Marketing the region – quality of life
Your Chamber will keep you up to date as activities proceed.
Abandoned shopping carts have become an issue in the City as its Administration is attempting to deal with the problem. The initial approach of charging individual businesses for their return was met with concern by the Chamber and we requested a meeting with City officials to explore options.
The meeting was a positive one and I’m pleased to report that suitable alternatives are being explored. Once again, the Chamber will keep members posted.
The recent announcement by the Wynne government has been met with concern by our Chamber membership and a number of them have contacted us. The proposed changes will have a major impact on many businesses and may well result in increased costs, employee reductions and potential business closures.
The Chamber is inviting members of the business community to a roundtable event during which they can air their views and help the Chamber develop a suitable response to the proposed legislation. I should note that media will not be in attendance. It will be held at the Ramada and you can register for the roundtable by calling Lyette at 613-933-4004, ext. 223. You can also register, on-line at: email@example.com. I hope to see many of you there … we need your input.
Mark your day-timers for Tuesday, June 27 for the final PubNite of the season. It will be hosted
