President’s Message

July 28, 2015

Hello everyone. Now that we’ve reached summer’s mid-point, the Cornwall business community may already be looking ahead to the fall season. The Chamber is looking ahead, too and we want to alert Chamber members about a number of potential activities and opportunities for the fall, ones that may help them to succeed and grow in today’s challenging economic environment.First of all, the Chamber would like to inform its members of an Ontario government web site that lists tendering opportunities. While it may not apply to all of our members, there may be contracts up for tender that some of our local firms could bid on.

Accessing the site is free and all that needs to be done is to visit the government’s project tendering web site: Once there, you need only to register and you would then gain access to the hundreds of potential contracts.

As is the Chamber’s custom, the fall season bring with it opportunities for professional development seminars and workshops. Many of our members took part in the successful Breakfast Connections program and the Chamber plans to continue with similar initiatives. As we look ahead, we want to hear from our members. Some possible topics could be employee issues, financing for a better bottom line, creating service-excellence, and advertising for best results.

Are there topics such as these or, others that you want to have the Chamber present? We want to hear from you.

Give us a call at the Chamber office or, send an e-mail to Executive Manager Lezlie Strasser at

Among other activities, the Chamber is exploring partnerships with the Eastern Ontario Training Board that would have the two organizations working together to present a series of professional development seminars. Discussions are underway and the Chamber will advise its membership as plans are put in place.

For those members with young people who are on the job hunt, and employers who want to post jobs, we’d like to share a good news story. St. Lawrence College has just launched an innovative, Eastern Ontario, on-line job board. The initiative has been launched through the College’s Career Services office and to access the site, visit the Chamber’s web site at and click on the red SLC icon.

Here is a terrific way to increase your sales. The Canadian dollar is at its lowest point in the past few years and that’s creating a huge opportunity for Cornwall merchants. The opportunity? Give Fair Exchange on U.S. dollars and let our American friends know! The Chamber hopes to post the Fair Exchange rate on its web site and when you give your American customers that rate, your bank will match that rate when you make your deposit. It’s that simple.

On the networking trail, and after taking a summer break, the Chamber’s popular PubNites will start the fall season off at Schnitzel’s on Tuesday, September 29. PubNites have become a popular ‘business-after-hours’ event as many of our City’s professionals drop by for delicious hors d’oeuvres and a glass of cheer. I’ll look forward to seeing many of you there.
