Chamber salutes member Chesley’s Inn
January 31, 2017
Historic Chesley’s Inn and Innkeeper Robert Prowse has put Cornwall on the “excellence-in accommodations” map. The Chamber has learned that for the second year in a row, the Inn has won a Booking.com guest review award. Not only that, it has been recognized with a Tripadvisors, Award of Excellence, each of which because of glowing reviews from its guests..
While these accolades are laudable, they could not have been crafted had it not been for the vision and considerable effort on the part of the owner. From Toronto, Prowse had gained prominence with both CBC and TVO as a writer, producer, director and author, a professional career that spanned many years and earned him a number of award nominations.
He was also prominent in Toronto’s heritage scene and it was during that time he came across a listing for a heritage building in Cornwall, one that was up for sale. Intrigued, and deciding it was time for a change, he retired from his storied broadcast media career and happily for Cornwall, settled in the community.
It was then he began to make his mark. Chesley’s Inn, a large brick structure in Cornwall’s downtown was built during the early 1800’s and for years, entertained guests before becoming the private residence of a local dentist.
Sadly, and as Prowse puts it, the house had fallen on hard times and was in a derelict state. However, with time, effort and no doubt a considerable investment, the place was restored to its original state as a stately Inn and opened to the public.
Today, Chesley’s Inn is gaining in both popularity and prominence as guests are delighted with its wonderfully historic ambiance and not surprisingly, the awards speak for themselves. Not only that, and as Prowse notes, the Inn’s downtown location is a definite plus.
“I’ve had consultants stay here and some who book here regularly because they love it here. You can walk down to Pitt Street and order a bottle of wine with dinner and walk back to your bed.”
Awards like this are also important for the development of tourism in Cornwall and the Counties. The Inn has already received bookings from Sweden, France, Germany and England for this summer. What’s even better is that guests from across Canada and the U.S. are finding it’s a great place to visit.
Chesley’s Inn has become a gem of a destination in Cornwall and the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce is proud of the impact one of its members is having on the community.
